ABOUT THE VAULTS

The Vaults at 1281 W. Ninth St., was the first bar in the Cleveland area to institute a regular Sunday brunch. Although other bars have followed suit, brunch at the Vaults remain something unique.

This is largely due to the talents of Weldon Carpenter, once called the chef of the stars. Mr. Carpenter received that title because his Hollywood memorabilia collection (which is SO extensive he has appeared on the Mike Douglas show three times to display it) has made it possible for him to cook for such stars as Judy Garland, Vicky Carr, Jane Powell, Martha Ray, and others.

But Mr. Carpenter's collection isn't the only reason for earning the title "chef of the stars." He is a more than competent gourmet who has been listed in Gourmet magazines as being one of America's ten best chiefs.

A typical Sunday brunch at the Vaults might include Marzetti, Hawiian Pork, Scrambled Eggs in Sherry, Fried Chicken, and many other savory dishes. Speaking of shows, the Vaults manager Bob Emerson is interested in providing an atmosphere for iocal talent. Mr. Emerson is presently renovating the stage and adding dressing rooms. He plans to keep his place open to all forms of entertainment other than drag shows.

The Vaults is a relatively new bar whose excitement resides in its potential. Mr. Emerson and his staff: Weldon Carpenter, John Jordan, Eddie, and Mary, want the Vaults to be a change from the typical gay bar. I hope Mr. Emerson is successful with his plans. Such a change of pace could offer new excitement for Cleveland's gay community.
